Getting Started with Blockchain Development

Intent & Motivation

Help experienced software developers understand how their existing skills transfer into blockchain engineering and give them a practical starting point for exploring Web3.

The session was designed to reduce the uncertainty developers often face when approaching blockchain engineering for the first time. I introduced the mental-model changes around wallets, accounts, transactions, smart contracts, blockchain networks, and on-chain state. I also showed how existing skills in frontend, backend, APIs, databases, and software architecture remain valuable in decentralized applications. The session concluded with guidance on choosing an ecosystem, avoiding unnecessary learning overload, and progressing from understanding blockchain concepts toward building practical applications.

Insights & Reflections

The strongest signal from the session was the interest from participants who wanted to move beyond blockchain awareness into practical development. The talk helped create a bridge between general Web3 curiosity and the questions developers face when choosing what to learn and build next. That interest continued beyond the event and led to deeper engagement with the Dapps Over Apps community. The collaboration eventually grew into a two-part technical series focused on blockchain development, Polkadot tooling, Rust, and smart contract engineering.
